FDA warning about Zantac (ranitidine) prompts legal action
In early April 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urged manufacturers of drugs containing ranitidine (an active ingredient in Zantac) to stop selling these medications. The FDA made its recommendation due to recent studies that revealed elevated levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a carcinogenic chemical that causes cancer.
In response, many people have taken legal action against manufacturers of drugs containing ranitidine, including filing Zantac cancer lawsuits against Sanofi, the French-based pharmaceutical company that manufactures Zantac. Our Zantac cancer attorneys at Chad Jones Law are currently actively reviewing legal cases. We have the knowledge, the experience, and the determination you need to win your case.
The FDA’s on-going investigation focuses on increased levels of a contaminant in the drug, which, over time, pose a risk to public health. Specifically, scientists are investigating a possible link between ranitidine use and cancer.
Studies link Zantac (ranitidine) use with cancer
On-going scientific studies have found that some people who take Zantac or other drugs containing ranitidine have been diagnosed with cancer. The first warning sign that something could be wrong first appeared in September 2019, when the FDA issued an advisory about increased levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in certain Zantac users.
That same month, several stores (including Walmart, Walgreens and CVS) announced they would stop selling drugs that contain ranitidine, including Zantac. Then in October 2019, Sanofi voluntarily recalled Zantac from stores in Canada and the United States.
