The number of traffic fatalities in Texas dropped in 2018 for the first time since 2015 according to preliminary data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Overall, however, Texas traffic fatalities have gone up 34 percent since 2010.
As reported in The News, there were 3,567 road deaths in 2018, a 4 percent decrease from 2017.
“The one factor that may have contributed to the drop in fatalities last year is the state’s new law banning texting while driving,” said Mark Hanna, a spokesperson for the Insurance Council of Texas. “Because of the tremendous loss of lives, many ICT member companies supported this legislation and the public awareness campaigns appear to have had an impact."
However,“Driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding continues to be the leading causes of fatal traffic crashes,” he said.
What can be done to reduce fatal crashes?
Advocates for Highway & Auto Safety reports that Texas is lagging behind when it comes to safety laws, which contributes to the high rate of traffic fatalities. In its 2019 Roadmap Report, the organization suggested that states implement 16 traffic safety laws. Only nine of them are active in Texas.
The remaining seven laws not in place include:
- Mandatory helmet use for all motorcyclists
- Ensuring that all child seats are rear-facing up to age 2
- Raising the minimum age to earn a learner's permit to 16
- Enforcing stronger supervision for young drivers
- Enforcing nighttime restrictions for young drivers
- Enforcing passenger restrictions for young drivers
- Raising the minimum age to earn an unrestricted license to 18
