Link between Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Roundup?
Some studies have found a link between Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and exposure to pesticides, including Roundup. The Section of Environment and Radiation, International Agency for Research on Cancer conducted such a study. The findings were published in April 2014 and titled, "Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and occupational exposure to agricultural pesticide chemical groups and active ingredients: a systematic review and meta-analysis."
The 2014 study examined 30 years of medical research and the link between Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and exposure to 80 pesticides. In particular, researchers found that farm workers exposed to glyphosate, an ingredient in Roundup, were twice as likely to develop Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Roundup has been on the market since 1974. In recently years, some countries have banned the use of glyphosate-based pesticides. Such countries include the Netherlands and El Salvador. The State of California also received court approval in March 2017 to label glyphosate as a cancer-causing carcinogen.
What is multidistrict litigation (MDL)?
Multidistrict litigation is a legal term used to describe when a large number of legal cases involving similar claims are consolidated into one, large case in a single, legal jurisdiction. This legal maneuver is generally done to speed up the process of resolving such cases.
When numerous cases are combined into one MDL case, such cases are often referred to as a class-action lawsuit. MDL class-action cases often involve thousands of people taking legal action against a single corporation due to similar injuries or illnesses.
There are many other unique aspects to MDL cases. As a result, it's critical that you have an attorney handling your case familiar with the MDL process. Attorney Jones thoroughly understands the process and can work closely with you every step of the way.
What is Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma?
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is type of cancer that affects a person's lymphatic system, a group of organs and tissues that fight infections throughout the body. Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma occurs when the lymphatic systems produces too many lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.
Normally, lymphocytes die off and are replaced by new, healthy lymphocytes. For people with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, their lymphocytes do not die. Instead, they divide and continue to live and thrive in a person's body.
As a result, an abnormal tumor (swelling of tissue) develops in a person's lymph nodes due to the large number of lymphocyte white blood cells. A person's B cells (white blood cells that produce antibodies to fight infections) are most often affected. However, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma can also affect a person's T cells (white blood cells that directly kill infections).
Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma?
There are many different symptoms of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. These include:
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chest pain
- Abdominal pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Lack of energy
If you or a loved one experiences any of these symptoms, talk to a doctor as soon as possible. Your health could be at risk.
